Allen Jones - A Brief Biography

(17 Mar 2005)

Allen Jones painter, printmaker and sculptor was born in Southampton [1937] and studied at Hornsey College of Art from 1955-59 followed by a year at the Royal College of Art where his fellow students included David Hockney and R.B.Kitaj.

After obtaining a diploma in art education Jones taught lithography and drawing at a variety of establishments throughout the 1960s whilst continuing to build his artistic reputation at home and abroad. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Biennale and at the John Moore's Exhibitions in Liverpool. From the mid 1960s onwards Jones also held regular solo shows in London and America where he lived for several years.

Around 1970 Jones became a fulltime artist and consolidated his reputation with Pop-Art type images. These were often erotic glossy female figures influenced by advertising images and it is perhaps no surprise that Jones also designed posters and was commissioned to produce a Pirelli calendar. He also developed as a sculptor often making use of non traditional materials such as fibreglass and aluminium.

Jones was made a Royal Academician in 1986 and his works are increasingly represented in public collections such as the Tate Gallery, the National Portrait Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum in Britain as well as abroad. Important retrospective exhibitions of his work have been held at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool [1979] and the Barbican Centre [1995].
