Zdzislaw Ruszkowski - Birch Tree (Tree Trunks) |
Polish born (1907-1991), Ruszkowski, the son of the painter Waclaw Ruszkowski, studied art at the Cracow Academy, 1924-29, followed by a further two years at the Warsaw Academy. During the late 1930s he worked in Paris where he was influenced by the work of Cézanne and came to know the English artist Matthew Smith.
During World War II Ruszkowski joined the Polish Army and served in Scotland before moving to live in London in the mid 1940s. There he held his first one man show at Roland, Browse & Delbanco (1948) and this was followed by more than twenty solo exhibitions during the following four decades. An important retrospective exhibition of his painting was held by the Leeds City Art Gallery which holds several examples of his work.
His work has a strong lyrical quality and he is
a powerful Colourist.
